Star City School District to Provide Free Meals to Children 18 and Younger
Students in Star City School District will have regular access to meals at no cost while at school and during remote learning
WHAT: | As schools in Arkansas and across the country move to virtual learning at home due to COVID-19 concerns, students in Star City will be able to continue to eat for free every day. Star City School District working in partnership with its foodservice partner Chartwells K12, is providing free Breakfast and Lunch to anyone 18 years old or younger. From August 2020 – June 2021, Star City School District students and families can visit Jimmy Brown Elementary at the back of the school by the cafeteria to pick-up meals. Every Tuesday starting January 12, 2021 10:00am-11:00am or 5:30pm-6:00pm Even though the 2020/2021 school year is like none other, the chefs and dietitians at Star City School District are still serving food kids love to eat and offering great-tasting menu options. Some of the meals that will be served, include: Hamburger, French Fries, Fresh Fruit and Milk Breakfast Burrito, Yogurt, Fruit, and Milk Health and Safety Remains a Priority While the logistics and location for how meals will be served is different, students, staff and parents can have peace of mind knowing that Chartwells K12’s foodservice plans for Star City are rooted in the most stringent health and safety practices aligned with federal and state regulations, along with local health department recommendations. All Chartwells K12 associates have participated in COVID-19 specific training developed in consultation with the Cleveland Clinic, undergo health screenings before each workday and follow strict guidelines for glove, mask and physical distancing protocols. Enhanced cleaning and santation measures help assure the safest environments possible. |
WHY: | Millions of kids rely on school lunches for regular meals. No Kid Hungry reports that 6 out of 7 hungry kids do not get the meals they need in the summer when schools are closed. Without access to regular meals, kids can suffer long-term setbacks both academically and in overall growth and development. |
